A town with historic Roman roots and a mining past, Castleford is a vibrant place to live and has seen significant regeneration over the recent years.

Local amenities

Castleford has a good variety of local stores, supermarkets and shopping outlets. The Carlton Lanes Shopping Centre is home to well known high street shops including Boots and Marks and Spencer. Additionally, Castleford has the Junction 32 Outlet, which is a multi-store shopping centre perfect for weekend shopping trips to pick up a bargain. 

The town is home to the Castleford Tigers, a top-level professional rugby team that competes in the Super League. There are also two large golf courses in Castleford with a bar and club house – Ferrybridge Golf Club and Whitewood Golf Course.

Castleford has a fantastic range of well-performing primary and secondary schools for residents. These include Castleford Academy, New College Pontefract and Glasshoughton Infant Academy which all achieved Outstanding on their Ofsted report.

Leisure

Right nearby to the Junction 32 Outlet is the Xscape complex, which provides a number of leisure activities including an indoor ski slope, laser tag and a Cineworld. 

For anyone interested in Castleford’s mining past, the Wheel of Light sculpture in Glasshoughton is worth a visit, standing as a community memorial to the Castleford miners.

Free to visit all year round, the Fryston Country Trails provide a great open space to explore at the weekend. It has 8km of walking trails, cycle paths and bridleways and offers great picturesque views of the River Aire.

Transport

A convenient location for commuters, Castleford’s single platform train station provides regular services to Sheffield, Leeds and Knottingley. If you’re travelling by car, Castleford is closely situated to the M62, M1 and A1. 

The local bus service links Castleford conveniently and cheaply to nearby areas such as Wakefield, Pontefract and Leeds city centre.
